Brown has to fetch a breakaway cow back to the mob. This is really a hard job for a dog to stop and turn back a cow moving downhill.

Brown is taking the pressure off his cattle by stepping away after having to really push to go through a gateway. If he had kept pushing he could have pushed all the cattle into the gateway; either some of the cows, or calves, could get injured, or, at the very least, they could wreck the fence.

Brown and Meg taking the Galloway cattle (a particular breed from Scotland) back to the hill. A dog is born with the coverage and attitude to work cattle; you cannot put it there.
